So if you ask for directions, and the person doesn't actually know the address, they often make a guess than admit they don't know the answer or don't understand your language. However with the increase in the number of foreign residents and visitors to Samui Island, the locals are adapting their lifestyles to live with them. But as the majority of the population here are Thais, it is better for you to learn the Thai language and learn Thai civilities to live in harmony with the locals here. Be ready for power cuts in Samui IslandThe electricity in Thailand east is 220 volts; however there are regular differences in tension which may have some effects on the electrical apparatuses that you use on Samui Island. However during heavy rains, there is always the chance of facing long interruptions in current in Samui Island. It is always better to carry an adapter when on Samui Island to make adjustments with two phase and three phases electricity wherever required. You can develop photographs in stores found around Samui Island. The rates here may prove to be a bit less expensive than the rates of stores found in Europe, but are of good quality and fast. However films are more expensive in Samui Island where you have to pay about 130 to 150 bahts for a 36 installation film. Slides usually cost the same; however not all stores can develop them. Modern digital photography is very much in vogue in Samui IslandSamui Island is also catching up with the modern world where you can easily have digital photographs from your numerical apparatus printed on photo paper when required. If you don't want pictures immediately, you can discharge the memory boards of your camera by making engravements of your photographs on CD in one of the many stores of Samui Island that proposes this service. These stores accept all kinds of support including Compact Card Flash, SD Card, Sony Memory Stick and others. Internet connectivity in Samui Island lets you work while holidayingYou can find internet cyber cafés practically all over Samui Island; especially on the tourist beaches. Most of the cyber cafés of Samui Island uses ASDL internet while some shops still use 56K modems. These modems are however very slow for surfing and takes up much of your time. If you have to carry your portable computer with you when you go on holiday to Samui Island, the best place to go for your internet needs would be the IT complex. This is a large building found in the north of Spangled. You can access the internet here without any wire with the Wifi internet access provided here. You will be provided with a chart PCMCIA when here where you just have to insert it in your portable computer to get internet connectivity. The internet bandwidth here is excellent and fast. Most of the hotels of Samui Island are equipped with the Wifi internet system for their customers. This makes it possible for you to surf the net while on the beach or in your hotel room. The costs for internet usage in Samui Island are about 1 baht for the minute, where you have to pay a minimum of 20 bahts. The police in Samui Island are friendly to touristsThere are basically two types of police forces on Samui Island; one that addresses the woes of tourists, and the other that caters to the needs of the inhabitants of Samui Island. If you have any problem, it is better that you first approach the tourist police force as the officers here can speak English quite well. However it is highly unlikely that you will need its services as Thailand, and Samui Island is a visitors' destination where you can travel and holiday in peace, if you respect the habits and way of living of the locals.
